We have studied all winter about ice, snow, cold, freezing temps, water cycle, etc. We decided to spruce it up a bit and end our freezing lessons on The Ice Age. I have a little boy in my room who is fascinated with dinosaurs. He has shared his knowledge with other boys in my room and it has really been a big topic in the K4 room. So one night at home...because my brain never shuts off... I thought I should incorporate/engage their fascinations into our lessons by "The Ice Age." The other teachers were on board. We decided to discuss what began the Ice Age, why animals survived/didn't survive (since we had just discuss Artic animals survival skills), and which of those dinosaurs lived in Alabama. I sent Dr. Ashley Dumas an email about helping us out. She worked her magic and was able to provide fossils from Alabama, answer any & all questions, and informed us on some really cool, fun facts. Mother Nature even came out to help us out and we had an "icy weather" on Tuesday.
Dr. Dumas and Ms. Emily came to talk to us about the Ice Age. They brought along some fossils and some artifacts that have been recovered from the Ice Age. These items were found right here in Alabama! We learned that the large animals during the time of the Ice Age were called Megaphona, which means, really big animals. We also learned that there were no real dinosaurs still alive during the Ice Age because all of them had died long before that time. We learned a great deal from Dr. Dumas and Ms. Emily today. We are so thankful that they took time from their busy day to come see us. We saw fossils from the Beaver, the Mastadon, and the Wooly Mammoth. We saw pictures of all the animals from the Ice Age that lived in Alabama.

Grady (Dr. Dumas' son) even wore his dinosaur sweater to school. :)
After all our learning, we had some really cool snacks. We made dinosaur cheese toast and Stegosaurus banana snack.
