How do bees pollinate

First, we broke into groups of 3. Each person in each group had to pick one item from their baggies to pick up "pollen" (flour) from the cupcake liner to their flower. They could only use one hand to do all of this.

"Can we hold the liner still?!", they all asked. "No!", replied the smiling teacher..."bees don't get to hold their flowers still, do they?" <-- true story, haha

Of course the students chose items that made it easy to scoop, but I had a trick up my sleeve. I had the students try the experiment again...but this time they could only choose fuzzy items. Craft pom poms, pipe cleaners, etc. They discovered it was harder to get alot of pollen and saw just how busy bees have to be. They also discovered how pollen may stay behind on bees and could travel with the bee. Continue through the pictures to see what we did next...

Flour left behind on our pom poms...I mean "pollen on our bees"

After the flour activity, we did a cheetos activity. We glued a cupcake liner into the center of a clipart flower. I filled each with cheetos. Then we dug in and had a nice little snack. But then we had those cheeto fingers!! So what did we do? We imagined that the crumbs on our fingers was pollen and we sprinkled it all over our flowers. Then we sprinkled pollen on our friends flowers. After we were finished, we wrote all about our discoveries.
