Science

In science today Ms. Annie read the book Anansi and His Children from our Creative Curriculum study.  The students discussed what all they knew about spiders and then they discussed spider webs. Ms. Annie’s essential question was “Why do insects stick to spider webs, but the spiders don’t?”.  Ms. Annie made a web out of masking tape and the students felt it and said it was sticky.  The kids pretended to be bugs stuck to the web.  Then they dipped their fingers in cooking oil and touched the tape again. They realized that with the oil on their fingers they didn’t stick to the tape. The students learned that spiders have oil on their legs that prevent them from sticking to their webs! So, now the students are able to answer the question “Why do insects stick to spider webs, but the spiders don’t?”.
